Right after flawless, VVS is the second best grade for diamonds. As displayed in the diagram to the right, there is barely any markings within or on the surface of a VVS diamond. Usually only a trained eye can spot the impurities in stone graded VVS1 or VVS2. Flaws may include minor nicks or pits outside of the table, and roughness on the girdle. VVS1 or VVS2 graded stones may have any of the following:
- A very tiny internal spot or a group of externally small spots outside the table.
- A very tiny crystal under the facet edge..
- A tiny feather which is not visible from the top of the diamond.
- Minor naturals on the girdle.
- minor pits and scratches not on the table.
- Slightly rough facet edges.
- The diamond may have a slightly larger extra facet.
While Flawless diamonds are the best, VVS and VS stones are also a great value. In addition, they are a bit more affordable. Being what is called by diamond wholesalers "eye-clean" - diamonds with no inclusions visible to the naked eye - VVS stones are stunningly beautiful. Unless one is carrying a 10X loupe (a strong jewelry magnifying glass) inclusions won't be seen. |
